Andy Yates Design Featured in Good Housekeeping
Michigan interior designer Andy Yates, principal of Andy Yates Design, has been featured as a design expert in Good Housekeeping’s latest guide examining the rise of matte paint finishes in residential design. Yates lent his professional perspective on how velvety, non-reflective wall treatments impart an understated elegance to high-end interiors, offering practical guidance on how to integrate the aesthetic into luxury residences.
The Good Housekeeping feature highlights the industry shift toward warm, organic, and lived-in spaces. In contrast to high-gloss and semi-gloss sheens that reflect glare, matte finishes absorb natural light, grounding a room and allowing deep, saturated hues to take center stage.
“It strips away the sterile, manufactured shine of traditional paints, resulting in spaces that feel intimate and grounded,” says Yates in the article. “A matte paint finish has a quiet sophistication that fundamentally changes how a room feels.”
Alongside aesthetic direction, Yates provided readers with essential execution advice for busy residential environments:
“If you are determined to bring this velvety texture into busier hallways or living areas, you must invest in premium ‘washable matte’ or scuff-resistant formulas engineered specifically for durability,” Yates advised.
Designing Elevated Midwestern Estates and Waterfront Retreats
The design philosophy Yates shared with Good Housekeeping reflects the tailored approach Andy Yates Design brings to affluent clients throughout Michigan and surrounding Lake Michigan communities.
Specializing in full-scale luxury interior design, bespoke interior decoration, and architectural collaboration for custom homes, the firm crafts residences that balance timeless beauty with modern functionality.
Yates works extensively across prominent regional markets, including:
Oakland County, Michigan: Designing refined estates and heritage residences in Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Franklin, and surrounding enclaves.
Lake Michigan Coastline (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois): Creating serene lakefront properties and luxury vacation retreats along the eastern shore, Harbor Country, and the greater Chicago North Shore area.
Western Michigan: Transforming expansive custom builds and private waterfront estates into deeply personal, cohesive homes.
By pairing tactile finishes—like washable matte paints, natural stone, white oak millwork, and custom textiles—Andy Yates Design curates spaces that feel curated rather than showroom-sterile.
